10th September 2009
Dear Parents / Carers and children,
Welcome back! I hope that you all had a fantastic break over the summer and that the children have come back refreshed and ready for a new school year.
We have changed the way the curriculum is being planned and taught this year and we will now be teaching through themes or topics, making many of the lessons cross-curricular. The topic we are studying this half term is People. Within this theme, we will be learning about our role at school, our own physical characteristics and how to keep ourselves healthy. We will also be learning about people from the past within our family, important people from the past within the medical world and the role of the vicar.
During the second half term our theme will be Festivals. Within this we will be learning about how festivals from different religions are celebrated around the world. In science we will also be learning about light and dark and how electricity works.
PE lessons will be on Wednesdays and Fridays each week. Children will need a full, named PE kit including a white t shirt, blue shorts and plimsolls which can be hung on their peg throughout the week. If the children do not already have one, they will need a named water bottle within school as we try to encourage children to drink water throughout the school day.
The children will have an opportunity to change their reading books on a daily basis and will usually take home one book of their choice and one that I have suggested, this should develop their reading skills, enabling them to make progress over the year. It is vitally important that children get the opportunity to read on a daily basis at home as this helps to consolidate work we do in school.
If you have any further questions or issues you would like to discuss with me please feel free to make an appointment. I am thoroughly looking forward to an action packed term!
Yours sincerely
Hannah Battersby
